DSD

Duales System Deutschland AG is a company that was founded by a network of German companies operating in the foodstuffs and packing industry in 1990 following the introduction of the German Packaging Ordinance. The company collects and recycles waste packaging. All products that can be accepted by the company's recycling system are labelled with a "Green Dot", indicating that they can be put in the Yellow Bag or Yellow Dustbin for collection by DSD. Companies that label their products with the green dot must in return pay license fees to DSD. However, the waste packaging is not collected, transported or sorted by the DSD itself. Instead, DSD commissions other waste disposal companies to carry out this task via public tender. For this, the Germany is split into 'DSD contractual areas', generally corresponding to the boundaries of the administrative districts and towns, for which interested waste disposal companies can submit their tenders. These waste disposal companies (such as Remondis, SULO/Altvater, SITA) include both regional and national operators At the start of 2005, Duales System Deutschland was taken over by Deutsche Umwelt Investment AG (DUI), which is itself a subsidiary of the American investor Kohlberg Kravis Roberts&Co.
